UAE says drones from Iraq targeted civilian sites and nuclear plant, reserves right to respond
The UAE Ministry of Defense announced that its air defense systems detected and intercepted six hostile drones over the past 48 hours that had attempted to strike civilian and vital installations, with no casualties or damage to critical facilities reported.
Investigations into a separate attack on the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant on May 17 confirmed that three drones had been launched from Iraqi territory – two were shot down, while a third struck an electrical generator just outside the plant’s inner perimeter.
The ministry said all drones intercepted in the period since were also traced back to Iraq, and warned that the UAE reserves the full right to take whatever measures are necessary to protect its sovereignty and national security.

UAE adviser warns that ambiguity is as dangerous as inaction amid Iran tensions
Anwar Gargash, a senior UAE diplomatic adviser, expressed frustration at what he described as a blurring of roles during what he called Iran’s treacherous aggression against the Gulf region.
He lamented that victim nations have found themselves cast as mediators, while friends and allies have stepped back from firm support into a neutral brokering role. In what he characterized as the most dangerous moment in modern Gulf history, Gargash warned that sitting on the fence is no less perilous than doing nothing at all.

US Central Command reported that it is strictly enforcing the American blockade on Iranian ports, having turned away 85 commercial vessels so far to ensure full compliance.

Graham backs diplomacy but doubts Iran will meet Trump’s tough terms
Senator Lindsey Graham reiterated that any US-Iran agreement must go through Congress for approval, as the Obama-era nuclear deal did.
While acknowledging that a diplomatic resolution would be a significant achievement, he outlined the conditions the US expects Iran to accept – including no uranium enrichment, American control of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile, unobstructed access through the Strait of Hormuz, an end to its long-range ballistic missile program, and a halt to support for regional proxy groups.
Graham made clear he is deeply skeptical that Iran will agree to terms that would make any new deal meaningfully stronger or more durable than the previous one.

Trump pauses planned Iran strike at Gulf allies’ request, keeps military on standby
President Trump announced he has stood down a military strike on Iran that was scheduled for the following day, citing requests from the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, who urged him to allow ongoing diplomatic negotiations to play out.
The three leaders expressed confidence that a deal acceptable to the US and the broader region – one that would bar Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons – could be reached.
Trump said he agreed out of respect for those allies, but warned that the military remains on full readiness to launch a large-scale assault at short notice if negotiations fail to produce an acceptable outcome.

Iran President: Peace talks will happen on our terms, not as concessions
Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian emphasised that engaging in dialogue is not an act of submission – the country negotiates from a position of strength and sovereignty, and will never compromise the legitimate rights of its people.
He pledged to serve Iranians with reason and full commitment while protecting the nation’s interests and dignity.
