US Central Command said the merchant vessel Sevan, one of 19 shadow fleet ships sanctioned by the Treasury Department for transporting billions of dollars worth of Iranian energy products, was intercepted in the Arabian Sea by a Navy helicopter from the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney.
The vessel is complying with US military orders to return to Iran under escort. CENTCOM said 37 vessels have been redirected since the blockade began, as US forces continue to enforce sanctions and the blockade on ships entering or departing Iranian ports.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, commending US security forces for “their swift action in neutralizing the attacker.”
He said Israel “stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States and President Trump” and called for “zero tolerance for political violence.”
US President Donald Trump said the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner would not affect his approach to the Iran conflict.
“It’s not going to deter me from winning the war in Iran. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, I really don’t think so, based on what we know,” he told reporters at the White House.
Trump had earlier said “you never know” if the incident could be linked to the Iran war, and said investigators were examining the motive of the shooter, whom he described as a “lone wolf.”
The shooting came hours after Trump cancelled his envoys’ trip to Pakistan for peace talks with Iran, having been unimpressed with Tehran’s negotiating position after nearly two months of war.
