A Marine expeditionary unit comprising 2,200 Marines aboard three US Navy amphibious ships is being ordered to deploy to the Middle East, according to two US officials cited by ABC News.
The 31st MEU, permanently based in Japan and operating in the Indo-Pacific Command region, is being redirected to the Middle East.
Officials noted the deployment does not necessarily mean the unit will be used as a ground force in Iran, but that it provides land, amphibious and aviation assets that military commanders could draw on if needed.
