Russia’s UN envoy Mikhail Ulyanov said President Putin told President Trump in a phone call that resuming US and Israeli military operations against Iran “would inevitably lead to extremely adverse consequences not only for Iran and its neighbours, but for entire international community.”
Putin also stressed that “a ground operation on Iranian territory would be particularly unacceptable and dangerous.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said “a new chapter for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is unfolding,” without providing further details.
Iran is establishing new management of the Strait of Hormuz with a corresponding legal framework, claiming it “will secure comfort and progress for the benefit of all the nations of the region.”
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the fiscal year 2027 budget includes $71.4 billion for modernising the nuclear triad, calling it the department’s top priority since taking office.
He pointed to Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons as justification, saying “imagine what the situation in the region would look like if Iran also wielded a nuclear weapon.”
The budget allocates $6.1 billion for the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, with the Air Force planning to procure at least 100 aircraft.
The Sentinel program receives $4.6 billion to replace the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile system with 400 deployed missiles across 450 silos.
The sea-based leg includes $16.2 billion for the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine, with procurement of the fourth vessel in the class.
Hegseth said the department is also focused on strengthening the defense industrial base, calling it “the foundation upon which its deterrence and survival rests.” He said under President Trump’s leadership, the US is “reversing this systemic decay and putting our defense industrial base back on a wartime footing.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres outlined three scenarios for the global economic impact of the Strait of Hormuz disruption.
Even if restrictions are lifted immediately, he said supply chains will take months to recover, with global growth dropping from 3.4 per cent to 3.1 per cent and inflation rising from 3.8 per cent to 4.4 per cent.
If disruption continues through midyear, growth falls to 2.5 per cent, inflation hits 5.4 per cent, 32 million people are pushed into poverty, and 45 million more face extreme hunger as fertilizer shortages reduce crop yields.
If severe disruptions persist through year-end, inflation surpasses 6 per cent, growth drops to 2 per cent, and the world faces “the spectre of a global recession.”
Guterres said “all of humanity is paying the price” and warned of dramatic impacts on people, economies, and political and social stability.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the Pentagon of lying about war costs, claiming the conflict has “directly cost America $100 billion so far, four times what is claimed.”
He said indirect costs are “FAR higher,” with a monthly bill of $500 per American household “and rising fast.” Araghchi said “Netanyahu’s gamble” is responsible, adding “Israel First always means America Last.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the US naval blockade is “an extension of military operations against a nation paying the price for its resistance and independence.”
He described its continuation as “intolerable” and said the world has witnessed “Iran’s tolerance and conciliation.”
UAE Presidential Adviser Anwar Gargash said international law and collective international will are the primary guarantors of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in the post-war phase.
He added that “no unilateral Iranian arrangements can be trusted or relied upon following its treacherous aggression against all its neighbors.”
