Iran announced that control of the Strait of Hormuz has “reverted to its previous state” in response to the continuing US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
The military’s Khatam Al-Anbiya command described the blockade as “piracy” and said the strait will remain “under the strict management and control of the armed forces” until the US restores full freedom of navigation for vessels going to and from Iran.
The reversal adds to confusion over the status of the waterway, which carried a fifth of global oil supplies before the war.
Just a day earlier, both Iran and President Trump had announced the strait was open for shipping, but Trump said the US blockade would remain in force until a deal with Tehran is reached, including on the nuclear issue.
President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open and ready for business and full passage,” but that the naval blockade targeting Iran will “remain in full force and effect” until a deal with Tehran is fully completed.
He said the process “should go very quickly in that most of the points are already negotiated.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open for all commercial vessels for the remaining period of the ceasefire, following the coordinated route previously announced by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation. He said the move is in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon.
President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping is “very happy that the Strait of Hormuz is open and/or rapidly opening.” He described their upcoming meeting in China as “potentially Historic,” saying “much will be accomplished.”
