President Donald Trump said Iran has informed the United States that it is in a “State of Collapse” and wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened “as soon as possible” while it addresses its leadership situation.
Trump said he believes Iran will be able to resolve its internal issues.
ADNOC CEO Sultan Al Jaber said the UAE’s decision to leave OPEC is “a sovereign decision in line with its long-term energy strategy, its true production capability and its national interest.”
He said ADNOC’s focus remains on “meeting the growing energy needs of our customers and partners around the world with reliability, responsibility, and the ambition to deliver more” across oil, gas, chemicals, and low-carbon energy.
Al Jaber added that “trust, partnership and credibility are not talking points – they are a track record.”
UAE Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said the decision to leave OPEC “reflects a policy-driven evolution aligned with long-term market fundamentals.”
He thanked OPEC and its members for “decades of constructive cooperation” and reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to “energy security, providing reliable, responsible, and lower-carbon supply while supporting stable global markets.”
The United Arab Emirates announced its decision to leave OPEC and OPEC+, effective May 1, 2026, in a move it said reflects the country’s long-term strategic vision and evolving energy profile. The decision follows a review of the UAE’s production policy and capacity and is based on national interest and a commitment to meeting global market needs.
The UAE said a stable global energy system depends on flexible, reliable, and affordable supply, and that the exit enhances its ability to respond to market dynamics. It pledged to bring additional production to market “in a gradual and measured manner, aligned with demand and market conditions.”
The country joined OPEC in 1967 through the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and maintained its membership after the formation of the UAE in 1971. The statement acknowledged decades of cooperation but said “the time has come to focus our efforts on what our national interest dictates and our commitment to our investors, customers, partners and global energy markets.”
The UAE said it will continue investing across the energy value chain, including oil, gas, renewables, and low-carbon solutions, and reaffirmed that its production policies will be guided by responsibility and market stability. It said the decision does not alter its commitment to global market stability or cooperation with producers and consumers.
The European Union and ASEAN stressed the need to uphold freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz at their 25th ministerial meeting in Brunei, co-chaired by Brunei’s Second Foreign Minister Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
The joint statement expressed “deep concern over any discriminatory or unilateral measures, that may impede or obstruct vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz” in violation of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Both sides called for the restoration of safe and unimpeded transit of vessels and aircraft through the strait to minimise disruption to food, energy, and essential goods and mitigate the impact on global economic stability.
The two blocs also reaffirmed their support for nuclear non-proliferation, pledging to work toward a successful 2026 NPT Review Conference and backing the treaty as “the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.”
Bahrain’s public prosecution announced life sentences for two Afghan nationals and three Bahraini citizens in two separate espionage cases for spying for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to carry out what authorities described as hostile terrorist acts against the kingdom.
An additional 25 defendants received prison sentences of up to 10 years in separate cases for supporting Iranian attacks against Bahrain.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he received a call from New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, with the conversation focused on Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote peace and de-escalation in the Middle East.
Sharif said he was grateful for Luxon’s support for Pakistan’s mediation role. The two leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral ties and Sharif invited Luxon to visit Pakistan.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he was “pleased to engage with Russia at the highest level” amid regional upheaval.
He said recent events have demonstrated “the depth and strength of our strategic partnership” and that Iran is “grateful for solidarity” and welcomes Russia’s support for diplomacy.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei called the US naval blockade “the outright legalization of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas,” saying “welcome to the return of the pirates – only now, they operate with government-issued warrants, sail under official flags, and call their plunder ‘law enforcement.’”
He said the United States “must be held fully accountable for this brazenly lawless behavior, which strikes at the heart of international law and international free trade.”
Senator Lindsey Graham said he is confident that Iran’s reported proposal to end the conflict by lifting the blockade and opening the Strait of Hormuz while deferring the nuclear issue would be “unacceptable” to President Trump.
He said the offer “tells you all you need to know about the true state of play regarding negotiations” and that it ignores Trump’s positions on Iran’s nuclear program and state sponsorship of terrorism.
Graham said if the offer is accurate, “Iran is playing games,” and urged Trump to “stick to your guns for the good of the nation and the world.”
The Fallen Heroes’ Affairs Office is holding a daily Salute the Flag ceremony at Wahat Al Karama in Abu Dhabi, with the Guard of Honour performing a formal tribute at the Memorial and Pavilion of Honour before sunset.
The ceremony, open to the public free of charge, pays tribute to the nation’s martyrs and offers visitors an opportunity to reflect on the values of service, sacrifice, and unity at one of the UAE’s most significant national landmarks.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US blockade “is not a blockade against shipping, it’s a blockade against Iranian shipping,” arguing that Iran “cannot be the sole beneficiaries of an illegal, unlawful, and unjustified system of tolling and control in the straits.”
