German Chancellor Friedrich Merz strongly condemned renewed Iranian airstrikes against the UAE and other regional partners, warning that attacks on nuclear facilities endanger the safety of people across the entire region. He called for no further escalation of violence.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber condemned the drone strike on Barakah as a terrorist attack on a peaceful clean energy project built to the highest safety standards, serving homes, hospitals, and industries across the UAE.
He said the attack also targeted every nation’s right to build and progress, but vowed the plant will continue operating and the UAE will press ahead with its development ambitions, saying the attack has only strengthened the country’s resolve.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joined the IAEA in condemning the drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, warning that targeting peaceful nuclear facilities poses grave risks to human life and the environment. He reaffirmed Canada’s solidarity with the UAE and called for urgent restraint and de-escalation across the region.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia launched from Iraqi airspace, calling them a violation of Saudi sovereignty and a threat to its security and stability. The UAE expressed full solidarity with the kingdom and support for all measures taken to safeguard its security and stability.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence announced that three drones entering the kingdom’s airspace from Iraq were intercepted and destroyed on the morning of May 17, 2026.
Spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki affirmed that the ministry reserves the right to respond at the appropriate time and place and will take all necessary operational measures to counter any aggression against Saudi sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that the drone strike on an electrical generator outside the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant perimeter caused no release of radioactive material, no impact on radiation safety levels, and no risk to the public or the environment.
The plant’s essential systems remain fully operational and no injuries have been reported. FANR said it is maintaining close coordination with the plant operator and national authorities, conducting an independent regulatory assessment of the incident, and continuously monitoring radiological conditions.
The authority urged the public to rely only on official sources and avoid spreading unverified information.

The kingdom reaffirmed its categorical rejection of such attacks, expressed solidarity with the UAE, and voiced full support for all measures taken to preserve UAE sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Prevot condemned the drone strike near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, reaffirming Belgium’s full solidarity with the UAE.
He warned that any military activity affecting or threatening nuclear facilities is unacceptable, as the consequences could extend far beyond national borders, and stressed that nuclear safety and security are non-negotiable.
