A late-night police chase in Riyadh ended in tragedy on Friday when a security vehicle plunged from an overpass, killing an Egyptian driver and injuring a police officer.
The Saudi General Directorate of Traffic said the crash took place on Prince Turki Al Awwal Road as officers pursued a stolen Mercedes-Benz. During the chase, the police vehicle lost control, veered off the bridge, and landed on another car traveling below.
The driver of the second vehicle, identified as an Egyptian resident, died at the scene. The officer behind the wheel of the police car was taken to hospital with injuries.
Footage shared on social media showed heavy traffic and crowds gathered around the mangled vehicles in the aftermath. Authorities confirmed the incident is under investigation and that legal procedures are being followed.
The suspect in the stolen vehicle escaped and had not been arrested as of Saturday.
