Spain are through to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Portugal 1-0 at Dallas’s Cotton Bowl Stadium in a last-16 tie settled by a single stoppage-time strike.
Mikel Merino scored the only goal of the match in the first minute of second-half added time (90+1), sending the defending European champions into the last eight.
Spain will face the winner of the USA versus Belgium fixture, scheduled for later the same day.
