Eagle Hills has signed an agreement with the Government of Maldives to develop a large-scale integrated destination in the Ras Malé area, in what the parties are describing as one of the most ambitious development projects in the country’s history.

The project, named Maldives Waterfront and Marina, carries an envisioned development scale across multiple phases. It will combine residential communities, hospitality, leisure and waterfront development on a single island site.

Eagle Hills Chairman Mohamed Alabbar said the company was not interested in replicating what the Maldives already does well. “To do another resort or hotel doesn’t interest us. Maldives already does that, and does that well. We want to do something different,” he said. “We want to take what people love about the Maldives and build on that. It is to stay, to live and ultimately to belong.”

Alabbar said environmental considerations would be central to how the project is designed and built. “Maldives is a beautiful dream. We will do everything with the environment in mind.”

A component of the development is earmarked specifically for local housing. “Being able to contribute 5,000 local homes in the Maldives is very close to our heart,” Alabbar said.

“Hopefully Emaar will be joining this development soon as we finalise some documentation in the company,” he added.
