The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security has announced that UAE nationals will be able to renew their Emirates ID up to one year before it expires, effective Tuesday 15 July 2026. The previous window was six months.
The change aligns with an earlier authority decision extending passport renewal eligibility to 12 months before expiry. Where the two documents share similar expiry dates, citizens can now renew both in a single transaction, reducing the need for repeat visits and separate applications.
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the authority, said the extended window reflects leadership directives to deliver proactive services and gives citizens greater flexibility to manage renewals on their own schedule. He added that the UAE holds a leading international position in identity card issuance, citing ease of access, service quality, and the card’s integration across government and private sector platforms through a unified electronic network.
Al Khaili framed the decision as part of the authority’s zero-bureaucracy programme, which aims to simplify customer journeys, reduce procedural duplication, and apply AI tools to service delivery. He described the shift as a move from reactive, transactional services toward bundled, proactive packages.
