EDGE Group and South Korea’s Hanwha have signed a Term Sheet at EDGE’s Abu Dhabi headquarters, setting out the framework for deeper cooperation on integrated air defence systems for the UAE.
The agreement covers three South Korean platforms: the Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (L-SAM) system, additional Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (M-SAM) capabilities, and the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System. Senior executives from both companies attended the signing.
The Term Sheet is intended as a step toward a broader long-term partnership, one that goes beyond individual weapon acquisitions. Subject to government approvals, the two companies will explore setting up a joint venture in the UAE, along with arrangements for local production, technology cooperation, and phased localisation aimed at expanding the country’s defence industrial base.
“This cooperation goes beyond the acquisition of individual weapon systems, with a focus on strengthening the UAE’s sovereign air defence capabilities and local industrial base. EDGE will work with Hanwha to establish a sustainable framework for industrial cooperation,” Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE Group said in a statement.
“We are pleased to take this important first step toward building a long-term strategic partnership with EDGE. By combining our technologies, capabilities and industrial strengths together, we aim to strengthen the UAE’s defence capabilities and identify new areas of cooperation,” Yang Ki-won, CEO of Hanwha Systems added.
The two companies said they will continue discussions on the scope and structure of the arrangement.
