Spain are world champions for the second time after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
The match was goalless through 90 minutes and into the second period of extra time before Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, settling a tournament that had been the largest in the competition’s history.
The 2026 edition, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, was the first to feature 48 teams. Argentina, who had held the title since their victory in Qatar in 2022, were unable to defend it.
Spain’s first World Cup win came in South Africa in 2010. This second title, secured 16 years later, confirms their return to the top of international football.
