Yemen secured qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup on Thursday, completing Group 5 of the tournament alongside the UAE, South Korea, and Vietnam.
The decisive match was played at the Hamad International Stadium in Doha, where Nasser Mohammadweh Al-Ghawashi scored twice — in the 62nd and 90th minutes — to give Yemen a 2–0 victory over Lebanon in the sixth and final round of Asian Cup qualifying Group 2.
Yemen finished top of their qualifying group with 14 points from six matches. Lebanon ended second on 13 points, while Bhutan collected 4 and Brunei 3.
The campaign was a steady build: Yemen drew 0–0 with Bhutan in Thimphu and 0–0 with Lebanon in Kuwait in their opening two fixtures, before winning 2–0 away in Brunei. They then ran up a 9–0 home win over Brunei, followed by a 7–1 defeat of Bhutan, before Thursday’s result sealed first place. Yemen had missed the previous edition of the tournament, making this a return to the finals.
The 2027 Asian Cup is scheduled to be hosted by Saudi Arabia.
