The United States and the UAE have agreed to establish Task Force Talon Synapse, a joint unit dedicated to accelerating the development of military AI applications. CENTCOM announced the agreement on July 28, with a formal launch scheduled in the coming weeks.
The Abu Dhabi-based team will comprise approximately 20 American and Emirati personnel with expertise in AI, data and cybersecurity. Its remit covers three areas: integrating AI into intelligence support operations, protecting critical infrastructure, and monitoring the regional security environment.
The task force traces its origins to a conversation between CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper and UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who discussed the concept last year. CENTCOM subsequently met with AI industry leaders and Emirati defence officials during a visit to the region last month.
“This will be a historic milestone as we work with one of our most capable regional partners to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighters,” Cooper said. “Together, we and our Emirati partners share a strong commitment to adopting AI applications that will foster innovation at speed and scale.”
CENTCOM describes the unit as the world’s first bilateral task force focused specifically on military AI development. For the UAE, the arrangement is a further signal of its positioning as a trusted American partner in defence technology, at a moment when AI infrastructure and military applications are both moving rapidly up the bilateral agenda.
