Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) has introduced a swallowable diagnostic capsule designed to detect upper gastrointestinal bleeding rapidly, potentially changing how emergency departments in Abu Dhabi triage and treat patients presenting with the condition.
The device, called PillSense, uses light absorption technology to identify the presence of blood within the gastrointestinal tract. Once swallowed, it transmits data wirelessly to a receiver monitored by clinical staff, with results available in under ten minutes. The speed matters in emergency settings, where suspected gastrointestinal bleeding can require fast decisions about whether to proceed to endoscopy.
During a pilot at SSMC, the technology indicated that invasive procedures were not immediately required in 86 per cent of assessed cases, according to the hospital. For patients, that translates to shorter waits and less exposure to procedures that may not be necessary. For clinicians, it offers a clearer basis for triage decisions under pressure.
“In emergency care, speed and clarity are critical. This technology provides clinicians with rapid, reliable insights, allowing them to make informed decisions with confidence and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time,” Dr Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City said in a statement.
“Abu Dhabi continues to lead in adopting innovations that directly enhance patient care and system performance. This milestone reflects our ability to move beyond innovation as a concept, and instead implement solutions that deliver real, measurable impact for our community,” Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi added.
SSMC is a subsidiary of PureHealth, which describes itself as the largest healthcare group in the Middle East. The hospital focuses on serious and complex care.
