UN Security Council Resolution 2817, adopted with 13 votes in favour and two abstentions from China and Russia, has drawn widespread welcome across the Gulf and Arab world, with leaders describing it as a landmark move toward reinforcing regional peace and security.
“The adoption of this resolution, co-sponsored by 135 countries, sends a clear and unified message that the international community will not tolerate attacks on our sovereignty or the deliberate targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure. The UAE thanks the Security Council for standing with the leadership and people of the UAE and our region at this critical time. We remain committed to working with the United Nations and our allies to uphold international law, safeguard stability, and prevent further escalation in our region,” mbassador Mohamed Abushahab, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN said, welcoming the Security Council’s action.
Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, whose country led the resolution on behalf of the GCC states and Jordan, said it reflected a firm international rejection of unlawful attacks and noted that the number of co-sponsoring states was the largest in the history of Security Council resolutions.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the resolution’s condemnation of attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure, reaffirming the kingdom’s right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Kuwait described the resolution as a pivotal step toward bolstering regional stability, while Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, highlighted the resolution’s condemnation of any Iranian attempts to close or disrupt navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, said the resolution demonstrated the international community’s recognition of Iran’s violations of international law, while Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, praised Bahrain’s role in rallying support and condemned Iran’s continued attacks as reflecting a failure to grasp the consequences of its actions.
US President Donald Trump has suggested the war with Iran could be nearing its end, telling Axios in an interview on Wednesday that there is “practically nothing left” to bomb.
“Any time I want it to end, it will end,” he said, adding that the conflict is progressing ahead of schedule. “The war is going great. We are way ahead of the timetable. We have done more damage than we thought possible, even in the original six-week period,” Trump said, according to the report.
His remarks came alongside comments from Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who indicated there is no set timeline for concluding the operation, saying it would continue “without any time limit, as long as required, until we accomplish all objectives and achieve victory in the campaign.”
The UAE has welcomed the passing of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which strongly condemns Iran’s unprovoked missile and drone strikes against the UAE, fellow GCC states and Jordan, and demands an immediate halt to the attacks.
The resolution, led by Bahrain on behalf of the GCC states and Jordan, determines that Iran’s actions constitute a breach of international law and a serious threat to global peace and security.
It also affirms the targeted states’ right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and calls on Iran to cease provocations against neighbouring states, including through proxy forces.
The UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, said the resolution – co-sponsored by 135 countries – sends a unified message that the international community will not tolerate attacks on sovereignty or the deliberate targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure.
The UAE reiterated its right to self-defense and its commitment to engaging with the UN to address violations, deter further aggression, and uphold international peace and security. Iran was also held liable for all injury and damage caused by its unlawful attacks.

The UAE strongly condemned what it described as an unprovoked Iranian drone attack on the Port of Salalah in Oman, which caused damage to a number of fuel storage tanks.
The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterised the strike as a serious escalation and a breach of international law principles.
The UAE also reaffirmed its solidarity with Oman, expressing backing for any measures taken to protect the sultanate’s security, the wellbeing of its people and residents, and its overall stability.
Bahraini authorities reported that Iranian aggression struck fuel storage tanks at a site in the Muharraq Governorate, with relevant agencies responding to the incident.
Separately, the Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science Directorate detained four Bahraini nationals and identified a fifth suspect believed to be overseas, all allegedly linked to espionage operations on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
