Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Friday inaugurated two bridges on Al Asayel Street as part of the Oud Maitha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project, which forms part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project.
The project links Al Asayel Street with Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street.
The first bridge serves traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street, while the second carries traffic from Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road towards Business Bay Crossing. The RTA announced that 72 per cent of the overall project has been completed, with tunnel construction works 70 per cent complete.
Two new bridges inaugurated in Dubai as part of Sheikh Rashid corridor development
“The development of Oud Maitha and Al Asayel Streets is being implemented under the directives of the wise leadership to complement Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development and accommodate the emirate’s ongoing urban expansion and population growth. The project is among the key road infrastructure developments, encompassing the upgrade of four major intersections, including the construction of bridges and two tunnels extending 4.3 km, in addition to roads extending 14 km,” Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said in a statement.
The tunnel under construction will serve traffic from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards Oud Maitha service road. Further road expansions and bridge structures are expected to open in the third quarter of this year.
The project will increase the traffic-carrying capacity of Oud Maitha Street from 10,400 vehicles per hour in both directions to 15,600 vehicles per hour – a rise of 50 per cent. Average journey times through the corridor are expected to fall from 20 minutes to five minutes, an improvement of 75 per cent.
New Dubai bridges to serve 420,000 residents across Za’abeel, Al Jaddaf and Oud Maitha by 2030
“The first bridge, inaugurated at the intersection of Oud Maitha Street with Al Asayel Street and Al Wasl Club Street, comprises two lanes with a design capacity of approximately 2,400 vehicles per hour. It accommodates traffic movements from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street, improving traffic flow efficiency and reducing travel times across the area.
“The second bridge is located at the intersection of Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road. It carries traffic movements from Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road towards Business Bay Crossing and comprises two lanes with a capacity of approximately 3,000 vehicles per hour,” Al Tayer added.
The project serves a number of residential communities and development zones, including Za’abeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha and Umm Hurair, as well as destinations such as Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club. The population of the areas served by the project is expected to exceed 420,000 residents by 2030.
The project encompasses upgrades to four intersections. The first, at the junction of Oud Maitha Street and Sheikh Rashid Street, involves the addition of a dedicated left-turn slip lane for traffic heading from Oud Maitha Street to Sheikh Rashid Street in the direction of Al Garhoud Bridge, raising capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour.
Works at this intersection also include upgrades to the service road along Sheikh Rashid Street between the existing bridge and the exit to Al Zahrawi Street, targeting traffic overlap and road safety.
The number of right-turn lanes for traffic from Sheikh Rashid Street to Oud Maitha Street towards Dubai–Al Ain Road will increase from two to three, raising capacity to 4,000 vehicles per hour. A tunnel will also be constructed linking the service road on Oud Maitha Street to the Sheikh Rashid Street intersection for traffic heading towards Bur Dubai.
The second intersection – at the junction of Oud Maitha Street with Al Asayel Street and Al Wasl Club Street – will see the construction of two bridges linking Al Asayel Street with Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street.
The first bridge has two lanes and a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour, serving traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street. The second comprises three lanes with a capacity of 3,600 vehicles per hour, serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel Street.
A separate bridge with two lanes and a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour will also be constructed to serve the left-turn movement for traffic coming from Al Asayel Street towards Oud Maitha Street.
Improvements to the entrance of Al Wasl Club and the entrances and exits of Al Wasl Club Street are also included, to address traffic overlap with the main road.
The third intersection, at Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road, will receive a two-lane bridge serving traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Khail Road in the direction of Business Bay Crossing, with a capacity of 3,000 vehicles per hour.
The exit towards Al Khail Road will be expanded to two lanes, with service roads constructed along Al Wasl Club Street in both directions and vehicle parking spaces provided.
At the fourth intersection – the junction of Za’abeel Palace Street with Al Khail Road and Oud Maitha Street – an extra lane will be added to the left-turn ramp for traffic from Al Khail Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road, doubling capacity from 900 vehicles per hour to 1,800 vehicles per hour.
A single-lane tunnel with a capacity of 1,200 vehicles per hour will serve traffic from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards Al Wasl Club Street, resolving traffic overlap in the area.
The existing bridge serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Oud Maitha Street will also be widened from two lanes to three, increasing its capacity from 2,200 vehicles per hour to 3,300 vehicles per hour.
