Marvel Studios has released the first teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday online, confirming that Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, will return in the film, which is set for release on December 18, 2026.
The trailer first aired in theatres last Thursday with screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Captain America is a father in Avengers: Doomsday first teaser trailer release
The teaser reveals that Captain America is now the father of a newborn child. Marvel plans to release more teasers focusing on other characters in the coming weeks.
The Captain America trailer leaked online before its debut, and a Thor-focused teaser also appeared in leaks this week.
Joe and Anthony Russo, who return to direct Doomsday after helming Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, released a statement on Instagram.
“The character that changed our lives,” they wrote of Captain America. “The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…”
The teaser opens on a farm, with Steve riding a motorcycle to his home as a piano version of the Avengers theme plays. His blue helmet recalls his Captain America costume, which he retrieves to admire.
He holds a newborn baby as the teaser ends with ‘Steve Rogers will return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. A countdown timer set to expire when Doomsday releases appears at the end.
Captain America last appeared in the closing moments of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. After defeating Thanos, Cap returned the Infinity Stones to their places across time.
An elderly Steve then returned to the main MCU timeline and passed his Vibranium shield to Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, making him the new Captain America. Steve went back in time to reunite with Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell.
After Steve went missing and was frozen in ice in the original Captain America film, Peggy aged but continued to love him. With Quantum Realm time-travelling technology, the two married and lived their lives together through the decades.
Questions remain about whether Steve returns to the main MCU timeline to rejoin the Avengers, whether this is the same Cap or a variant from Endgame, and whether the baby has powers.
Marvel also released the first poster for Doomsday, which features a green hue similar to Doctor Doom’s costume. Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel franchise, not as Tony Stark (Iron Man) but as Doctor Doom in the film.
Evans previously returned to the MCU in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine for a cameo as the Human Torch, his role from Fox’s 2005 Fantastic Four film.
Other returning actors include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.
From the X-Men universe, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Channing Tatum and Rebecca Romijn will cross over into the MCU.
