Disney+ announced a new app experience for customers across the Middle East and North Africa at an event in Riyadh, with the updated platform going live on October 6.
The redesigned app promises more personalised content recommendations based on individual viewing habits, smoother streaming while travelling across Europe, the United States and elsewhere, and enhanced parental controls.
A dedicated children’s mode, called Junior Mode or عالم الصغار in Arabic, will give parents greater oversight of what younger viewers can access.
“The breadth of entertainment coming to Disney+ reflects the incredible range of stories our audiences across the region love to watch. From family entertainment and returning favorites to Korean storytelling, our focus is on bringing audiences more choice and more of the entertainment they love, all in one place. As we continue to bring more great entertainment to Disney+, we also want to make it easier for audiences to discover and enjoy their favourite stories. Our new Disney+ experience is designed around how people in the region watch today, with greater personalization, more flexibility while travelling and enhanced features for families, creating an experience that feels increasingly relevant to the audiences we serve,” Tamim Fares, Director of Disney+ in the Middle East and North Africa said in a statement.
On the content side, October opens with Merry Berry Love on October 7, followed by The Kardashians Season 8 on the 8th, The Simpsons Season 38 on the 12th, and Marvel’s VisionQuest on the 14.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 arrives later in the month, with the live-action Moana expected in autumn. A second season of Turkish drama Halef was also confirmed at the event by cast members İlhan Şen and Biran Damla Yılmaz. Korean series The Remarried Empress leads the November slate, arriving on the 4th.
The headline announcement of the evening was a localisation first: Toy Story 5 will become the first Walt Disney Company film to be dubbed in the Saudi dialect, alongside existing MSA and Egyptian Arabic versions.
Disney says the adaptation was developed with attention to language, humour and cultural context, and draws on a cast of Saudi actors, comedians and content creators. Named roles include Ibraheem Khairallah as Buzz Lightyear, Sohaib Qudus as Woody, Reem Alhabib as Jessie and Abdullah Rafeaa as Forky, among others.
