The United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution demanding that Iran immediately cease all attacks against commercial vessels and refrain from obstructing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, after Russia and China used their veto power. The resolution received the support of 11 countries, while Pakistan and Colombia abstained.
The draft resolution, submitted by Bahrain, which currently holds the Security Council presidency, called for the condemnation of attacks targeting commercial vessels in the strait, held Iran responsible for undermining maritime security, and authorised states to coordinate defensive efforts to ensure the safety of ships, including escorting them when necessary.
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani expressed deep regret over the Council’s failure to act, warning it would have “serious repercussions for humanity” and describing Iran’s control over international navigation as unjustified and illegal.
He stressed that Iran has no right to close the Strait of Hormuz or deprive the world of vital resources, and that the Gulf states are a primary source of energy flow to the world, making the strait a shared international responsibility.
The resolution also expressed concern over the extension of threats to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, describing any attempt to obstruct navigation in these vital waterways as a serious threat to international security.
