“Removing zeros from the old currency eases transactions but does not itself improve the economy,” President al-Sharaa stated during the launch.
He stressed that economic growth depends on higher production, lower unemployment, and a banking sector that functions with stability.
President al-Sharaa called for calm during the transition. He assured citizens that old banknotes will be exchanged gradually according to a structured timeline.
The new notes reflect Syria’s heritage. They aim to simplify trade, reduce dollar dependence, and restore confidence in the Syrian pound.
Advisor Abdulah Al-Shamma noted that the reform strategy rests on five pillars: monetary stability, a transparent exchange market, a banking sector with strength, secure digital payments, and sustainable international financial integration.
The ceremony took place at the Conferences’ Palace in Damascus on Monday, with President al-Sharaa and Governor Husrieh presenting the new banknotes to attendees including Mrs al-Droubi.
