Developers can now submit apps for review and publication in ChatGPT, following OpenAI’s app submission guidelines. The company said the move builds on the introduction of apps in ChatGPT at DevDay earlier this year.
Apps extend ChatGPT conversations by adding context and enabling actions. These actions include ordering groceries, turning an outline into a slide deck, and searching for an apartment.
OpenAI said it has published resources to support developers, based on lessons since DevDay.
App submissions open on OpenAI Developer Platform
These resources include guidance on “what makes a great ChatGPT app”, open-source example apps, an open-sourced UI library for chat-native interfaces, and a step-by-step quickstart guide.
OpenAI is also launching an app directory inside ChatGPT. Users can browse apps or search for published apps through the tools menu or by visiting chatgpt.com/apps. Developers can use deep links on other platforms to direct users to their app page in the directory.
Once users connect to apps, apps can be triggered during conversations when mentioned with an @ symbol or selected from the tools menu. OpenAI said it is testing ways to surface relevant apps within conversations, using signals such as conversational context, app usage patterns, and user preferences. Users will have options to provide feedback.
OpenAI said building an app begins with designing for user intent. Developers can use the Apps SDK, which is now in beta, to build chat-native experiences that bring context and action into ChatGPT.
Review process includes testing and metadata
According to OpenAI, effective apps are “tightly scoped, intuitive in chat”, and focus on completing workflows that start in conversation or enabling AI-native experiences. Developers are encouraged to review the app submission guidelines early. Documentation and examples are available in the developer resource hub.
Developers can submit apps and track approval status through the OpenAI Developer Platform. Submissions include MCP connectivity details, testing guidelines, directory metadata, and country availability settings.
OpenAI said the first approved apps will begin rolling out in the new year. Apps that meet quality and safety standards can appear in the app directory. Apps that see user engagement may be featured in the directory or recommended during conversations.
During this phase, developers can link from ChatGPT apps to external websites or native apps to complete transactions for physical goods. OpenAI said it is exploring monetisation paths, including digital goods, and will share updates based on developer and user behaviour.
Privacy policies required for all apps; users retain control over app connections
All developers must follow app submission guidelines covering safety, privacy, and transparency. Apps must comply with OpenAI usage policies, be suitable for all audiences, and follow third-party terms when accessing content.
Each app submission must include a privacy policy, and developers may only request data required for app function. When users connect an app, ChatGPT will disclose what data types may be shared and provide access to the app’s privacy policy.
Users can disconnect apps at any time, after which the app loses access.
OpenAI said apps are intended to act as an extension of conversation, helping users move from ideas to action while supporting developers. The company said it plans to expand the app ecosystem, improve discovery, and add ways for developers to reach users and generate revenue.
