Apple and Google announced a multi-year partnership, under which Apple Foundation Models will be built on Google’s Gemini models and cloud infrastructure.
The models will power Apple Intelligence features, with a redesign of Siri set to launch this year.
Apple conducted an evaluation process before selecting the search engine’s technology as the foundation for its models.
“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models,” the company said in a statement.
Apple and Google Partner on AI: Siri personalisation coming this year
Apple said the collaboration will unlock “innovative new experiences” for users of its products. Apple Intelligence will continue to operate on Apple devices and through Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
The company stated it will maintain its privacy standards throughout the implementation of the partnership.
Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology will form the basis of the next generation of Apple’s models, though processing will remain on Apple’s systems.
The partnership will enable changes to Siri, with a version featuring personalisation features scheduled for release in 2025. The voice assistant will be among the first Apple Intelligence features to utilise the Google-based foundation models.
