SSMC deploys swallowable capsule to detect gastrointestinal bleeding fast

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) has introduced a swallowable diagnostic capsule designed to detect upper gastrointestinal bleeding rapidly, potentially changing how emergency departments in Abu Dhabi triage and treat patients presenting with the condition.

The device, called PillSense, uses light absorption technology to identify the presence of blood within the gastrointestinal tract. Once swallowed, it transmits data wirelessly to a receiver monitored by clinical staff, with results available in under ten minutes. The speed matters in emergency settings, where suspected gastrointestinal bleeding can require fast decisions about whether to proceed to endoscopy.

During a pilot at SSMC, the technology indicated that invasive procedures were not immediately required in 86 per cent of assessed cases, according to the hospital. For patients, that translates to shorter waits and less exposure to procedures that may not be necessary. For clinicians, it offers a clearer basis for triage decisions under pressure.

This technology provides clinicians with rapid, reliable insights, allowing them to make informed decisions with confidence and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time,” Dr Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City said in a statement.
