WeRide and Uber Technologies have launched Level 4 driverless robotaxi operations in Abu Dhabi, marking the first deployment of its kind in the Middle East.
The launch follows the granting of the world’s first city-level driverless robotaxi permit outside the United States.
Abu Dhabi becomes the first city beyond U.S. borders to host driverless operations on the Uber platform.
Driverless Robotaxis begin commercial operations on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island
Operations began today on Yas Island, with no vehicle specialist inside the autonomous vehicle. Passengers can book rides through Uber Comfort, UberX, or a new “Autonomous” category โ Uber’s first dedicated autonomous ride option.
In October 2025, WeRide’s robotaxi secured a federal permit to conduct driverless commercial operations. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) subsequently granted WeRide and fleet operator Tawasul the first operational licence for a driverless commercial robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi.
The ITC endorsed the initiative as part of the UAE’s smart mobility vision. The initial phase will be operated by WeRide and Tawasul on the Uber platform.
WeRide and Uber stated that the robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi are “on track to achieve breakeven unit economics” following the driverless launch, latest permit, and improvements in vehicle utilisation.
The companies plan to expand Middle East operations to thousands of robotaxis over the coming years.
WeRide has operated robotaxis in Abu Dhabi since 2021, maintaining what it describes as a four-year first mover advantage in autonomous vehicle deployment in the emirate.
In 2023, WeRide became the first company in the UAE to receive a national licence covering all types of self-driving vehicles, authorising autonomous testing and operation on public roads across the country, subject to emirate-level approvals.
WeRide and Uber launched their robotaxi ride-hailing partnership in Abu Dhabi in December 2024. The partnership expanded in July 2025 to cover approximately half of Abu Dhabi’s core areas, including Al Reem and Al Maryah.
By the end of 2025, the companies plan to extend services to cover areas in Abu Dhabi city core. WeRide currently operates over 100 robotaxis in the Middle East.
