Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has launched a next-generation Smart Test System that automates light-vehicle yard testing using AI, computer vision, and centimetre-level positioning technology. Candidates can replay their test route on a 3D map after the session, with errors flagged visually and results calculated without human intervention.

Key points

  • RTA's new Smart Test System automates yard test scoring with no human input
  • RTK positioning tracks vehicle path to within two centimetres during tests
  • Candidates can replay their full test route on an interactive 3D map afterwards

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a new Smart Test System for light-vehicle yard testing, bringing AI, computer vision, and real-time data analytics into the driver licensing process.

The system automates the entire assessment process, monitoring learner performance across all manoeuvres without human involvement in calculating results. Identity verification is handled through facial recognition, tying each result to the correct candidate.

Smart cameras track mirror and blind-spot checks and hand positioning on the steering wheel throughout the test. Vehicle positioning uses Real-Time Kinematic technology, which the RTA says delivers accuracy to within two centimetres, allowing the system to detect errors in parking, yard manoeuvres, and vehicle path with a high degree of precision.

“The next-generation Smart Test System marks an important step forward in RTA’s smart transformation of driver licensing services, harnessing advanced technologies to enhance testing and assessment. The system is designed to ensure that learner drivers are evaluated against consistent and precise criteria, minimising inconsistencies in assessment, strengthening customer confidence in test results and providing a clearer and more transparent testing experience. The system goes beyond automating the calculation of test results. It provides an integrated framework for monitoring and analysing learner performance across different manoeuvres, while presenting recorded errors in a clear visual format. This enables customers to understand the reasons behind their results and identify areas for improvement. The smart safety technologies integrated into the system also enhance learner protection during the test through AI-powered collision avoidance and preventive emergency braking systems. These features help reduce the likelihood of accidents during testing, create a safer and more controlled testing environment, and place greater emphasis on addressing risks before they result in accidents,” Sultan Al Akraf, Director of Drivers Licensing at the Licensing Agency, RTA said in a statement.

After a test, candidates can replay their full journey on an interactive 3D map that shows where major and minor errors occurred, a feature the RTA says is meant to improve transparency and help learners understand why they passed or failed.

The system also includes AI-powered collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking, designed to intervene before a potential collision during the test. The RTA says it maintains consistent performance in varying weather and lighting conditions, including at night.

Performance data from the system will be fed back into training programmes to help tailor instruction to individual learners. The RTA frames the initiative as part of Dubai’s broader push toward a smart, safe, and sustainable transport system.
