Taylor Swift left the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards as the most-awarded artist in the show’s history, collecting the inaugural Artist Director Honors on Sunday night to break the tie she previously shared with Beyoncé – both had 30 VMAs each.

The new honour recognises artists “whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.”

Swift, who said she has been involved in making roughly 60 music videos over two decades, directed 18 of them. “I got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos 20 years ago,” she said in her speech.

She also won video of the year for The Fate of Ophelia, taken from her album The Life of a Showgirl, and dedicated the award to the late Dolly Parton. “I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time,” Swift said.

Parton, who died in Nashville of cancer in August at age 80, was honoured separately with a tribute performance by Kacey Musgraves, who covered Parton’s I Will Always Love You.

Swift also used the ceremony to debut the music video for her new single, Patient Zero, which she directed and which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The track is her first release since her marriage to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July.

Madonna opened the two-hour show – broadcast live on CBS from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles – with her 2026 single Bring Your Love, performed alongside Sabrina Carpenter. The pair later won best collaboration for the track. Madonna also claimed artist of the year and best dance, returning to the stage three times in total.

Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, with surviving members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear accepting. “Kurt was one of one,” Novoselic said, adding that the band’s music endures because audiences remain hungry for “something real, something uncompromising.” Public Enemy’s Chuck D presented the award, describing Nirvana as “completely original and always fearless.”

LISA won best pop for Dream, featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, while Sienna Spiro was named best new artist. Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony, which was delayed 20 minutes by a scheduling clash with an NFL game.
