Sinners, the vampire horror film starring Michael B. Jordan, has set a new benchmark at the Academy Awards after securing 16 nominations, surpassing any film in Oscar history.
The production exceeded the previous high of 14 nods, which had been jointly held by three films spanning seven decades: All About Eve in 1951, Titanic in 1998 and La La Land in 2018.
Director Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners emerged as the dominant force in this year’s race, outpacing its closest challenger – One Battle After Another, a political thriller featuring Leonardo DiCaprio – which garnered 13 mentions.
Michael B Jordan earns best actor nomination in vampire thriller Sinners
Jordan earned recognition in the best actor category for his dual portrayal of brothers who establish a music venue in 1930s Mississippi, only to face an onslaught from bloodthirsty creatures.
Supporting performers Wunmi Mosaku, a British-Nigerian talent, and London-raised actor Delroy Lindo also secured nominations for their work in the production.
Coogler received acknowledgement across three disciplines – helming, scripting and producing – while the film itself entered the running for the ceremony’s most prestigious award.
Timothée Chalamet secured his third career nomination for a table tennis drama Marty Supreme, becoming the youngest male performer to reach this milestone since Marlon Brando, at 30 years old.
He faces competition from Ethan Hawke, who collected his fifth nod for his work in Blue Moon, alongside Brazilian talent Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.
Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley nominated for best actress
In the female acting race, Irish performer Jessie Buckley leads the pack for her turn in Hamnet, a Shakespeare adaptation, facing Emma Stone (Bugonia), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) and Norwegian talent Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value).
Her co-star Paul Mescal, who played William Shakespeare in the period piece, failed to secure recognition.
Stone achieved a milestone of her own, becoming the youngest woman to collect seven career nominations at age 37.
