Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film has a title, a cast, and a release date. DIGGER, a Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures production, will open in cinemas and IMAX across the region on October 1, 2026.
Tom Cruise leads the film as a powerful figure on a frantic mission to prove himself humanity’s saviour before a disaster of his own making spirals out of control. He is joined by Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.
Iñárritu co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, from a story by Berman, Iñárritu, and Jez Butterworth. The film is produced by Iñárritu, Mary Parent, and Cruise, with Joshua Grode as executive producer.
Much of the crew comes from Iñárritu’s previous projects. Emmanuel Lubezki serves as director of photography; Stephen Mirrione and Conor O’Neill edit; Jacqueline West handles costume design; Alessandro Bertolazzi leads makeup and hair; and Francine Maisler is casting director. Production design is shared between Dennis Gassner and Richard Johnson, with Kazu Hiro on prosthetic makeup and Cosmo Sheldrake composing the score.
The production was shot entirely in VistaVision, the large-format widescreen process last used widely in the 1950s and 1960s, which Iñárritu’s team has revived for what looks to be one of the more technically ambitious releases of 2026.
